墨西哥遭逢百年來最強地震，目前死亡人數已攀升至61人，有災民悲嘆罹難人數之多，連棺材都缺貨。美國科學家則警告，如果芮氏規模8以上地震發生在南加州地區，後果恐怕無法想像。
墨西哥南部外海發生芮氏規模8.1強震，這不僅是墨西哥百年來最強地震，也是全球今年以來規模最強的地震。總統潘尼亞尼托（Enrique Pena Nieto）在推特上表示，已知有200人受傷。
根據墨西哥各州官員通報的數字，死亡人數恐會超過80人。受創最嚴重的城市瓦哈卡州胡契坦（Juchitan）居民感嘆連棺材都買不到，因為罹難人數太多了。胡契坦已至少36人罹難。
「洛杉磯時報」（LA Times）報導，地震學家瓊斯（Lucy Jones）表示，墨西哥強震基本上遠離人們的居住地區，但在南加州則是人群居住在斷層帶上，且斷層帶離地表近。包括洛杉磯（Los Angeles）、河濱（Riverside）市與聖伯納地諾（San Bernardino）郡等人口稠密地區，都與聖安德列斯斷層（San Andreas Fault）帶毗鄰。
墨西哥地震的震央距離首都墨西哥市約450公里。瓊斯警告，如果同樣的地震發生在南加州地區，恐怕傷亡無法想像。1906年舊金山發生芮氏規模7.8的強震，保守估計造成3000人死亡，地震後各地引發的大火重創舊金山。
1857年，南加州也曾發生規模7.8的強震，不過當時的南加州還是尚未開發地區，且人煙相當稀少。1994年洛杉磯北嶺（Northridge）也發生芮氏規模約6.7的淺層地震，但是釋放的能量都遠不及這次的墨西哥強震。
